A creepage extender is also called a silicone ruuber shed for high voltage boosters, bushings, and insulators. A creepage extender is often used to improve and increase the anti-pollution flashover performance of external insulation of substation equipment (such as post insulator, circuit breaker, transformer, transformer bushing, and disconnector). It is mainly made of high molecular polymer with silicone rubber, and various fillers and additives are also added through a unique manufacturing process. By molded into a rain booster shed and bonded to the surface of the porcelain skirts, this creepage extender can increase the creepage distance of the porcelain skirts and improve the surface characteristics and shape. Rain booster shed and porcelain skirt form a combined insulation structure. This fomation has a better and stronger anti-pollution flashover characteristics than pure porcelain insulation.
The number of creepage extender relates to the lengths of ice edge. According to the observation, the maximum length of a single ice edge is about 10 am, so sufficient margin (〉10 am) shall be reserved in the spacing of creepage extender to prevent ice edges or rain from shaping bridges. Due to the following reasons, it is recommended to use as multiple pieces as possible.
1. when the porcelain surface is exposed to glazed frost or heavy rain, or if the porcelain sleeve is dirty and wet, the external insulation performance will decrease. In this situation, the number of pieces can be large. Because the voltage borne by ta single silicone rubber rain booster shed is relatively low, and the insulation margin is large. At the same time, in the case of a single creepage extender failing to work, the voltage rise borne by other single creepage extender is relatively small, which can avoid collapse and thus has relatively high reliability.
2. If it is under bad working conditions, creepage extenders shall be installed on the surface of porcelain bushing. The larger number of pieces is large, the better improvement of potential distribution.
3. When the creepage distance of the insulation outside the porcelain sleeve is quite different from the required value, the silicone rubber rain booster shed is needed to improve the parameters. If the number of pieces is too small, you need to increase the extension of the creepage extenders. This action may have adverse effects on the equipment operation, like reducing the self-cleaning performance or edge collapse of the lower surface.
In recent years, the high-voltage power transmission and transformation company has increased the anti-pollution work of substation equipment. They have installed creepage extenders and coated RTV coating for most of the equipment whose external insulation creepage distance does not meet the requirements. In the prone season of pollution flashover accidents, strengthening the operation monitoring of substation equipment, monitoring the number of discharge photons with the ultraviolet detector, and timely cut off and clean some equipment with a large number of discharge photons, All these actions will effectively eliminate potential accidents and ensure the safe working of substation equipment.
